A Tradition Written in Paper

Mizuhiki (水引) is a traditional Japanese decorative cord that serves as much more than a simple ornament. For centuries, it has been an essential part of Japanese life- used in gift - wrapping and ceremonial occasions to represent respect, sincerity, and the deep cultural value placed on human connections.

Historically, these cords have been cherished as symbols of purification and protection. Every knot tied is an act of etiquette: a silent, graceful way of expressing one’s heart to another.

From the Heart of Iida: The cords used by itookäsi carry a prestigious lineage. They are crafted in Iida City, Nagano Prefecture - the historic heart of Japan’s Mizuhiki production.

With a heritage dating back to 1672, Iida continues to preserve this ancient art through dedicated workshops and master artisans who produce the finest cords in the country.

The Alchemy: From machine-made washi paper to jewel

The creation of Mizuhiki is a fascinating transformation of humble materials into something extraordinary.

  • The Foundation: Each cord begins with machine-made washi paper, which is twisted into a firm, resilient base.
  • The Coloring: The paper core is then brought to life-either through delicate dyeing or by being meticulously wrapped in rayon, silk-like fibers, or shimmering metallic foils.
  • The Modern Shift: While tradition dictated strict rules for colors and cord counts, today.

Mizuhiki finds a new home in modern jewelry. At itookäsi, we embrace this creative freedom while honoring the craftsmanship of the past.

The Language of the Knot: Symbolic Meanings

In Japanese tradition, the style of a knot is chosen with great thoughtfulness. Here are the stories and wishes woven into our most beloved designs:

Awaji Knot (あわじ結び) - Unbreakable Bonds
Recognizable by its elegant, rounded shape reminiscent of an abalone shell, the Awaji knot is the foundation of many styles. Because it tightens when pulled, it symbolizes a strong, unbreakable bond and the beauty of an enduring relationship.

Plum Knot (梅結び) - Resilience & Good Fortune
Named for the plum blossom -the first flower to bloom after a long winter-this knot represents resilience and new beginnings. It is a celebratory symbol of strength and the arrival of bright days.

Aioi Knot (相生結び) - Harmony & Growing
Together Aioi translates to "growing together." Formed by interwoven loops, this knot represents the joining of lives, harmony, and the beauty of a shared partnership.

Turtle Knot (亀の子結び) - Longevity & Lasting Happiness
Shaped like the sacred turtle, an ancient symbol of long life, this knot is used to wish for health, enduring happiness, and a peaceful journey through time.

Pine Knot (松結び) - Stability & Prosperity
Inspired by the evergreen pine tree, this knot symbolizes stability and a life that stays vibrant through every season. It carries wishes for lasting success and a prosperous future.
